Why Do This?

I graduated in 1996 so you may wonder, after all this time, why do this? Don't you have better things to do than to relive your youth? Sure. There's only one way to answer that question -- because I wanted to do this.

Well, okay. There's a deeper answer. It was COVID. Seriously. Once the initial panic of the pandemic subsided, it became a dark time for us. Personally, the lockdown left me isolated, lonely, and depressed. Like everyone else, I was bombarded daily with the grim news of sickness and death. Those times really make a person think about their mortality. We lost so many people. I'm sure we lost many brothers. We've lost brothers not just during COVID, of course. It took a worldwide event to realize that we have lost so many stories.

In an attempt to alleviate all of the darkness, I looked for ways to busy myself. I do not remember a specific moment -- there may not have been one. I just found myself thinking about Sewanee and about the Deke House. It is not great to live in the past, but the memories of my time as an active are good ones that got me through the storm. It got me thinking, wouldn't it be great if there was some archive or historical record of those times? Something to look back on when you need a minute to remember? Somewhere to keep the legacy and the story of our brothers alive?

So there it is. There's my why. I'm looking forward to getting stories and pictures. This isn't just my vanity website. This is your website too. If you want to help or pass on some information for me to upload, I would be ecstatic to get in touch (seriously...no Gen X sarcasm in that statement) -- virtually or in person. I always try to make it to Homecoming each November, and I will always be up for a Sewanee Deke get-together.

In the Bonds,

Heath Rico-Storey
